It's so freaking cool. At first impression I'd say it's better but I have to compare.

That's different for sure. But the yelling vocal sounds too filtered now... like a bit boxier. I kinda liked the weird thickness of the first one.

The scream sounds crazier but so does the original now, did you change it?

I tried your earlier suggestion about the longer scream. I wish I could have pulled it off. After 5-6 attempts and a sore throat I gave up 'cause I guess I just can't scream for very long.
The screaming vocal was duplicated with a few ms slap delay on the right. Last version was panned hard. This time I panned it less hard and lowered the amount of feedback. You'd think it would sound less boxy, but you're right.

Thanks about "Wondering". That's the band I'm in, and we got a whole lotta songs tracked that need mixing. I'm sure I'll post some in the clinic soon.

I didn't comment in the other thread, but this is an amazing piece. I listened to the first version about 10 times, but that was yesterday, lol. I've slept since then, so I'm not really able to comment on the differences. To be totally honest with you, I don't feel qualified to comment on this mix at all, lol. It's just totally different. Under normal circumstances, I'd like to hear a more defined midrange; it sounds really muted and boxy, but when I listen for individual instruments, I seem to be able to make them all out just fine, so maybe it's TOO middy (as opposed to muddy). See what I mean? lol...I'm not qualified.

I do feel qualified to say that it's entertaining.

I just listened to that with my jaw hanging open like a numbnuts. That was one of the more original peices I've heard around here. Nice job freakin me out.

Thanks for listening. I'm trying hard to get at the "muted and boxy". I tried to fix that in the mix, but I think the problem is in the tracking. It haunts all my mixes. A friend who is a pro is coming over at the end of the month to check out what I'm doing. Maybe he'll help me get to the bottom of this.

For anyone who takes time to compare, this is basically what I did for the remix.
-added second bass track in unison w/ the first
-reverb on drums and main rhythm guitars
-compression and eq on drums to make them more defined
-rolled off low end on some of the guitar tracks
-less stereo and delay effect on screaming part
-added low vocal part to the fast vocals (very soft)
-farted with levels here & there

ultra cool.. Can't offer mix suggestions because of unfamiliar new speakers, but the recording sounds very 1 dimensional to me.. Don't know if that makes any sense.. It sounds good but doesn't seem to have a lot of balls to it.. Great song though.. Interesting use of pitch shifting on the vocals.. Bass drum sounds very low and it sounds pretty light on the bass and sorta mid rangey.. Part of me thinks it sounds real good though.. What are you using for drums? Great writing!

Just to add to the confusion-I think I like the first version better---I like the way the vocals sound in the new version(I noticed that low vocal during the fast section sounds good)-but I liked the power of the guitars in the first version-and the horn parts seemed more prominent as well

just as an aside...that metal clank on the left in the beginning-gives me a childhood flashback-to those combination swing set slide things-I had in the backyard when I was a kid.....

OK I'm on the 4th time listening to both-back to back. This is such a brilliant song! If I heard the new version first I would have still loved it. But I stick by what I said earlier...Vocals sounded better this time-but I liked the music better last time. Oh and the bass is still not very uhh pronounced...to me.

Thanks for listening. I know exactly what you are saying about 1 dimensional. Before finding this clinic I thought that was just the homerecording sound. But lots of you guys don't have that sound so no more excuses for me. Problem is figuring out where the problem is, and I think it's in the tracking. I tried to address it in this remix but didn't really get very far.
Drums are a Slingerland set, close miced in a dead room (part of the problem?) with SD condensors as overheads.

Thanks for speaking up that you liked the first mix, especially since it sounds like you did a thorough comparison. I thought the horns were more prominent on the remix, but my ears are shot on this tune. I will revisit this after a few months of working on other things. Maybe do some retracking too. And yeah, I'm struggling with the bass, so thanks for keeping me in check.
The "clank" is a metal beam in the drummer's basement. It was pretty comical when we were taping shirts along the beam and moving mics around to get the perfect clank.
