Please look at my bottom....

...end. I'm trying to achieve decent bass range mixes, and learn about how it affects perception of the other ranges. I got rained out of work today so I thought I'd tinker with a full production of "TAKEN". I'm also working toward a possible CD version of this song, so other comments are welcome as well. (Vocals too loud?)

Thanks a lot!

Exclamation I can't look...

..but I did listen. LOL!

Seems a bit hot around 100 or so. I think high-passing the vocal on the quieter passages would help tighten it up a bit. It's a bit boomy on those parts.

Cool

Vocals too loud?....maybe you should ask Dobro

to accurately test this, i listened on my home stereo set the way id listen to other CD's.....the bottom end is nice and clear.....

vocals were just fine where im coming from......could you bring it down 1-2 db and get away with it?....probably so but all this is subjective, dependant on the type of mix YOU want......

we should have a Homerecording.com record label cause some of you guys are producing some slamming ass shit......

Thanks you too! Very helpful. I'm posting a quick adjustment. I cut a small area of the lows out of the lead vox in the verse. Does it sound right? Any other mud? Thanks again!

SHAT!! Damn this is so crystal clear. I got 20/20's cranked to unity and this is da shit. Bass and kick are sounding sweeeeeet! What a fucking lead ride..shit man! On to the vocals...they just rock! Only thought i have at the moment is the b/g voc at 2:55 seems kinda dry? plain jane? or something...the one in the left/right speaker? Anyways, i've gushed enough ,,you rock Tom.

M. Brane and Gidge- Good ears, you two. I heard it right away after I read what you said. Thank you.

freshears- Thanks a lot. Ya it is dry, maybe I should try adding something, but I wanted it that way. But you're not the first person to mention it, so i should probably work with it. Thanks again!

Smokepole- Glad to hear you liked it, Joe! That helps too. Thank you.

fprod south- Thanks a lot man. I brought the bass on Perry up some too. Other than that, I'm gonna wait a while before I approach that song again. Thanks for the scan.

I hear Zappa in this!
Very cool as usual.............I know I'm not fulfilling my sworn MP3 Clinic duty to deeply critque every aspect of the mix but I just like your stuff as is.

Crap! You do some cool vocals and that's where I hear the Zappa influence. So I suppose you'll say you never listened to him. LOL

What......only three minutes?! What the hell?!?!!

nice ass!

this is beyond me. you need a pro at this point.

from my non pro perspective, the bass is the only thing in the mix that possibly still needs work. it still sounds a little undefined, but just slightly. nice posterwork for dfh though!

lol... that was awesome...

I just get finished listening to your most "normal" song ever, and then you hit me with this.

This was definitely... er.... adventurous.

Mix sounds good. Bottom end is pretty good, but my setup isn't the best judge of bottom end, so I can't be that good of a judge.

Cool beans man.

the bass sounds good to me.........too me, i can hardly tell the difference between say a good bass tone and an excellent one.......to me, i can only notice when it's bad..........this isn't bad........good? maybe excellent? maybe........i don't know.......i'd miss it if it were gone though, if you get what i'm saying....

this is a great production.......very, very well done.......quick question, the rnc compressor that you have....what voltage did you get, 120v or 240v version? also, do just run vocals through it...acoustics too?

Holy hell...

Pretty nice, man. The only "problem" area for me was around 1:30...it got kind of blurry in there in the low end...only at extremely high volumes, but it did it on my monitors and on my headphones? It was a brief rumble, lol...in an otherwise joyously clean trip.

That lead tone just kicks ass...end of story.

Lt. Bob- Ahhh, Zappa. I used to listen to much more Zappa than I do now. And I should be listening to more! There's still so much to listen to that I haven't even heard yet. He was like that. It took me a minute to see what you meant, but it's probably that lower range voice stuff. He has such a thick voice didn't he? Thanks so much Steve! It's helpful enough that you listened and enjoyed.

freshears-

erichenryus- Thanks a lot man. This is a keyboard bass line, so it's hard to get the kinda definition I truly want in the bass. I'm trying to get around re-tracking ALL the bass parts of everything I've recorded before working on my cd. It's just too much work. BUT...I think I can get it tighter if need be! I am an optimist. Thank you Eric.

WATYF- Hey man, I read your response in my other thread from a few days ago too. Thanks a lot for all of it. I also listened to your cd submission tune. You are putting out some pretty amazing recordings, my friend. Keep 'em coming!

jake-owa-

powderfinger- I usually have that same attitude about bass. But after mixing a few of Guernica's bass lines I've started to appreciate what a good bass line can do. I just haven't recorded one myself yet! Thanks a lot! For US, go 120v. 240v. is the British standard. I had ordered the 240v but the guy from Mercenary called me up to politely check with me. I thanked him like a kid at Christmas.

chrisharris- Thanks for listnening man. I know this sort of thing must be a chore for you to get through, what with all the weird changes. So I appreciate you sitting through it. I'll look at that 1:30 section and see what I can do. Cheers!

Wish I could listen to the difference.
Me and this thrasher from work rode around after work tonight/this morning and got all buzzed up and I threw in your stuff and we were riding around listening to it... he's all like "man, thats pretty wild shit"
Anyway, I have no contribution, just worthless interruptions... carry on... as you were... semper fi... kiss my ass.... etc etc.... yeah yeah yeah...
Good work none the less.

His voice thickened a lot after 'the insane fan' incident: some wacko 'fan' threw him off a very high stage (he thought Frank was making eyes at his woman, or something like that). Zappa was in a wheelchair for a few months and after his recovery he discovered his voice was about an octave lower. Weeeeeeeeeird.

So if you really want a thick voice like that...

Can't wait until I get home to listen to your mix, SLuiCE.

I won't comment on your bottom end ... not that there is anything wrong with that.

Seriously, it sounds good on a cheap computer and headphones but that is not too much help.

I do want say the production is great. I really love listening to your stuff on headphones as you create a great soundscape.

Plus, I really liked this song. Vocals were cool too.

Are you high? lmao - If it were a chore, you wouldn't see my name in here. Now, a "chore" would be sitting through a six minute tune that never changes...you know, like my tunes, lol. Ease up, partner...you're damned good.

I love this song! Your bottom sounds great to me. The harmonies rock on this song.... Be that a 12 string?

Are you a fan of Faith No More or Mr. Bungle?

Hey, did you fix some vocals as well? It sounds great, no cringes at all this time! (but perhaps I'm confused with another song)

The bass: a real one! Hooray! I would love to hear a more distinctive sound, though. It could be the bass but it gets lost in the louder parts. Perhaps a well-chosen compressor and eq on the mids can help you to let it jump out a little (or make 'room' for it but cutting some of the mids in the guitars/vocals)

But I can live with this mix as it is....like flat-9 said in my thread a few days ago: how perfect do you want it to be?
