I want to use midi in a live performance using a keyboard drum machine and sampler. I know that the other instruments can be triggerd with the keyboard but I have only seen a keyboard trigger another keyboard and the slave keyboard played the same as the other one. If I do this with the drum machine, will the drum machine play the same thing that the keyboard plays only in drum sounds? Obviously I don't want that, I would like to make a beat on the drum machine and be able to make it play from the keyboard and keep the times synced up. Also if anybody knows any good books on midi I would appreciate it.

If both are GM compatible (and you set them in certains mode to do so), then yes. You'll hear them plays similiar sound (eg. snare to snare, kick to kick etc...). However, particular synths allow you to re-map the channel / notes. It's a loooong story.

You better tell us what keyboard / drum machine you use.
