Mastering? what does it do? (mega newb question)

Ok What does Mastering do? I feel stupid asking but hey, im curious. Like Does it make a big or a small difference on your Song, or whatever you send in.

And what do you need to send them when you do send it to get mastered. Just like A CD of of your bands Stuff or do you need to send them big files and crap. Do you have to Save it as a certain type? I just want the Details.

Yes, it makes a BIG difference.

You should ask the mastering house what format they would like your material received.

You could send it on CD or DAT, I'm sure.
