What Am I Doing Wrong???

Hey. I am having a lot of problems with the whole hookup from my MR-8 to my iMac running 0S X. First off, once I stick my Compact Flash Card into the CF Reader, I click on the icon, and I notice there are some .wav files already in there. So, I took some advice on this board, and downloaded the SoundApp to convert it to a .AIFF file. Then, I decide to reboot my computer in 0S 9 so I can open up Pro Tools. I open up Pro Tools, click New Session, and name a new session. Then, I click Import Audio From Another Track. Then I can't ever find the .AIFF file that I converted, no matter where I store it, so I usually just click on one of the .wav files and click Convert. Then I click a spot to save it in. After a little while, it says the file is too fragmented to be played by Pro Tools (Free Version). Is there something I am doing wrong??

So, are you saying that you can copy the .wav file (say, the stereo wav from the '2mix' directory down to the MAC and then convert if to AIFF format? But then you cannot find that file anywhere on your MAC machine?

Is there a search function on a Mac that will allow you to search for all files that are of a certain type? If so, can you do a search for AIFF files and see what you come up with?

Sorry I can't give you a dead-on answer. PC's I can do, MAC are a whole different beast to me -

Pro Tools Free claims to support AIFF, but if it is not working.....I suppose you get what you pay for....

If Pro Tools does see the .wav files, there is no reason not to use those. However, before you copy anymore .wav files to your hard drive, use Norton Utilities, Techtool, or something to defrag your drive.

There are some issues using the MR-8 and a Mac. Go to the FAQ on the fostex site. I believe it tells about it on there.

I've had the same problem using an iMac running OS 9.2.2 with ProTools Free. I found two workarounds. One was suggested on this forum, which is to use SoundApp to convert the MR-8 wav. I think I was converting it back to wav, though, not AIFF. I'll have to refresh my memory to make sure. The other workaround was to download ResEdit and use it to edit the MR-8 wav files (copied to the HD from the card first, of course). You have to change the type and creator. I just opened another wav file, one I had downloaded from the internet, which ProTools could see, and copied the type and creator codes into the MR-8 wav file. The edited MR-8 wav file would then appear in the ProTools window and I could convert it. All the wav files thus edited and converted worked perfectly in ProTools.

There is another glimmer of hope, in that the Fostex international site has posted a Mac version of Wav Manager. I haven't tried it yet, but it might accomplish the same thing as the ResEdit hacking in a more elegant manner. I will try it out myself at the first opportunity, but that might not come for some days yet. Let us know how it goes. You'll get it to work, just keep at it.
