2xl or not 2xl, that is the question

OK...I did a search and there was one or two old threads on this, but I'm interested in what y'all think about it now that you've used it awhile & some new folks may have used it as well

Is Sonar xl 2.2 worth the extra $100 (upgrade) over Sonar 2.2? Crap...if I'm gonna get in trouble for buying new software, maybe I just ought to go all out .

IMO, no. But it really depends on what other plugins you have available. If you don't already own any mastering plugins, it might be worth the extra $100.

I went for the Pro Audio Deluxe when I first bought PA9. Since then I've avoided all the deluxe packages. Keeps the upgrade path somewhat reasonable money-wise. Generally they've been charging around $79 to upgrade to the newer versions (non-XL).

Yeah, depends what plugins you already have. The Timeworks Compressor and EQ and DR008 are fantastic plugins, and worth way more than $100 in total, but if you have a good compressor, EQ and drum sequencer/sampler, then it is hardly worth it. Those are the only differences between 2.2 and 2.2XL that I am aware of.

Thanks guys. I don't have any other great plugins along the compressor an EQ line. I was just using the FX1,2 & 3 plugins and Anwida lite reverb. No mastering software at all. So...hmmm....

if you don't have any plugins other than the FX1, 2, 3 , then I would say it is worth it. The Timeworks Comp and EQ are really dang good, and (after you get your head around them) powerful and easy to use. Nice sound too (compressor especially). The DR008 is also a great tool, and unless you are a Kazaa user (none of them here I am sure ) you aren't going to find anything like these things at this price. Even getting the compressor and eq at the Sonic Timeworks website costs $179 and $199 respectively. You can't go wrong.

Just a suggestion... have you looked at Home Studio XL?

I was looking at that initially and the main reason I chose Sonar is multiple inputs (ie more than 2 inputs). You said that you already have the FX1 & FX2 which are inlcuded in Sonar. If you are only recording 2 tracks at one time it might be worth a look.

I take it you have probably already seen this site . It gives a comparison between the Cakewalk products.

You guys have helped me make my decision. I am going to go with xl. I just can't pass up $400+ of software for an extra $100. Home studio looks good, but there are just enough limitations on it to make me a little uncomfortable. Namely, I may indeed want to record more than 2 tracks at a time in the future and with the 1010lt, I have a horse to pull that wagon when I get there.
