Up til now I have been recording using adat, I want to start recording on a computer, but I don't have one. I wanted to know what you guys recommend for a computer before I get one. I am still undecided about whether to get a mac or P.C. and my budget is about $1000.00 dollars. Also what programs should I get? I was thinking about ensoniq paris, but that's mostly just because it's the only one I have used and heard it was discontinued. I see it around previosly owned sometimes for a price I can afford.

Software ?? Too many choices,,,,perhaps Cakewalk Products, Logic, Cubase, PTLE, to name a few of the most popular.

Thanks, I noticed that the computer you listed is a P.C., any reason for that? I keep hearing I should get a mac from a lot of people, but then the other day some guy at school was telling me the opposite.

I thought i'd give a little more info on that last question i asked, I have been using my friends PC to record on, but at school we use macs. I tend to do things smoother with the pc, but people are always telling me about the superiority of macs when it comes to doing sound. I thought it was possibly just my inexperience with macs.

The quality gap has narrowed considerably between macs and pc's for audio. A lot of the difference now boils down to favoritism.

In your situation I would lean more towards the pc. Not only is it considerably less expensive, but also there are many 24-bit audio interface cards for pc's on the market which exceed the quality of the A/D conversion in adats.

If you are happy with the sound of your adat, then you will be just as happy, maybe even more so, with a well running pc with a 24-bit audio interface.

You also say you are comfortable using a pc, another reason to go in that direction.

Good points Cy...
There are some programs that tend to do better on a mac, like Logic, Cubase and Protools. If you intend to use your setup for other things, there's a lot more software out there for the PC.

My advice to you is NOT to get rid of your ADAT! Go ahead and get the computer you need it to do editing, But you are going to find that straight up recording on a computer is a real PAIN IN THE ASS! Especially if you are multitracking.

Either a mac or a PC is going to be fine for music. If you are concerned about budget then a PC will ususlly give you more bang for your buck because there is more competition in that arena.

Some considerations you might want to think of:

How noisy is the unit? If you are going to be recording from a microphone with the machine nearby you may have some trouble with the fan noise.

Second, how portable do you need it to be? Portability does not necessarily mean a laptop. There are some cool small desktop systems like the Shuttle

The Mac will definatly run you about $500 more. That is a huge consideration. Also the sofware to put on the Mac is more expensive as well. I think that is why the Mac is not any bigger than it is. I work in IT and I do hear about how far that the Mac has come especially since they went to a very user friendly Unix based OS.

I saw go for the pc and spend the money on other things.
