Question Octava MK319 vs. MXL 2001

Is $99 a good price for the 319?? I need an all around mic for vocals and overhead drums. Also, for $99 each would the MK319 be better than the MK012??

I have an Octava 319 and it's kind of a dark vocal type mic, but I like it. I've never tried the Octava 319 as an overhead before... however, the Octava MC-012's are some of my favorite drum overhead mic's.

Thumbs down

No ! !

Keep the mc012s.

And look at some better vocal mics, while you're at it. The Oktavas are too dark and muddy, and the 2001 is too bright and harsh . . . unless you have some soldering skills and like to mod things, that is.

What chessrock said. Look at the Studio Projects B1 at $79 each; they're great as overheads, as well as on vocals that don't require lots of "built-in" high frequency peaking or mid scooping. Buy a pair and you're set for any type of stereo recording.

Harvey said on the Marshall Electronic thread http://homerecording.com/bbs/showthr...threadid=84694 that the Marshall MXL V67 along with a matched pair of Marshall MXL 603S's would be a killer package. I've got to agree.

You asked :

The 2001 is a very bright, brittle-sounding mic IMHO, and I doubt if many people will be happy with it in the long run. The V67 (in green or any other color) is a pretty decent mic, as MXL mics go. My hunch is that you'll get more mileage out of it than you would the 2001.

Someone here or at Harmony Central said they thought Marshall was packaging the 2001 with a 603 (a very decent SDC) just to get rid of their inventory of 2001s...

That's what I think.
