best recording software for midi

was wandering which recording software is best fit for midi use aswell as recording the normal guitar and vocals and stuff.
is there one above the rest or that have special functions?

If you use a Mac, I'd suggest Logic or Digital Performer


If PC, Cubase SX


Some here will suggest Sonar, but that's more of an Audio Studio with some midi- and it doesn't support VST instruments, which are a must.


The new Fruityloops, FL Studio, does a little of both- but if you want full implementation of both, Cubase is the way to go

There are so many programs meet your demand. Cakewalk, Cubase, N-Track, etc... etc...

Products are vary depend on your specific purpose, budget, and features you need.

don't have a lot to spend but i'd like to be able to have a hands on approach to "warp" the sounds that i create using a midi keyboard. i would like to be able to take any sound and mess around with it into something new.

How much your range ? You can search on E-bay for some used Korg X5D or something. It's relative not expensive.

With sequencer I posted above, you don't have to worry about it. You can record, and edit your MIDI data recorded later. Add chord, quantize, "draw notes", change the "piano sound" to "trumpet" etc etc... The main factor is your synth/sampler (MIDI devices). Make sure it's at least GM compatible.

Chrisjob, are you sure you know enough about Sonar to say what you said? I'm not looking to start an argument, but you said Sonar is more of an audio studio with some midi. SOME midi?? Dude, you can manipulate the hell out of midi with Sonar. Cakewalk has been at the top of the heap when it comes to midi for years. I tried Cubase SX, and personally, I find it much more difficult to work with midi than Sonar. Sonar's interface is better, and it's much more user-friendly. Of course, I'm a Sonar user, so I'm going to come to it's defense, but what are you doing with midi in SX that I can't do in Sonar? And while we're comparing, does SX have anything equivalent to Sonar's instrument definitions or studioware panels? Can I import my keyboard's voice banks into SX? That's one thing I wasn't sure about, but was curious. Anyway, Sonar is very, very, very capable for midi sequencing, just as I'm sure SX is. Thanks

SONAR handles VST and VSTi just fine with a VST-DX wrapper, and they are cheap to get, Sonar has its own native wrapper for download to registered users for all of $39. If you can't afford the download, there are several out there, and you can live for about 6 months on just downloading the demo versions which time out after 30 days, or 90 days or whatever. When one times out, download the next one. I have been doing this for months now and have changed the VST-DX wrapper 4 times without any more than 10 minutes of work each time to reconfigure my plugin manager.

Sonar is by no means deficient in the MIDI arena.
