Grace 101 and a 311 type band?

OK so at the studio we have a Soundcraft Studio with 16 pre's, an ART Pro MPA, a Soundtracs Topaz, and a Grace 101. I am excited to try the Grace (it is in the mail), but I fear that it's clear pristines sound will not fit the 311 style funk, rap, rock band comming in next month. It is a big project and I am wondering if I would be better to get a neve clone for the job. Please let me know any info you have on this. I am also considering the Peavey VMP-2 Tube pre. Also if any of you have any suggestions that would make recording a band like this even better, please let me know. Thanks

Remember 311.........?

The Grace will sound great on those chorus-laden clean electric guitars...

It might work on vocals, it might not-

What kind of mic do you have?

Interesting Topic...

I myself am into the Hip hop Heavy metal rap arena..... Are there some Pre's that are too clear and defined for this music Genre????

I am looking for a pre and have considered the Grace 101 or the RNP for my first 500+ investment on pre's.......

Any advice for either of us???

PS. I have a akg c4000B
c=port 2000
Motif 6
Aphex 101

looking to get a Blue baby bottle or Mouse....

Jesus, guys.

Unfortunately, they don't make different mic pres tailored to specific kinds of music. Not even the marketing guys will go there, although I wouldn't be surprized if they did. "The Grace 311; when you really want that 311 sound." I can see it now.

Something like a Grace design will sound like whatever goes through it . . . which, by the way, could very well be 311 provided 311 or similar band is playing through it.

Just use whatever you got or whatever works.

And there's no such thing as something being too clear or too defined. If it is, then run it through a cheap compressor and you should be set. Think dbx 160 or similar.

Regards,

Chess

Mic collection:

BLUE Dragonfly
NTK
(2) 012's
603s
57's
C-1
V67G
(2) V63's
A Drum Mic Kit
SM58

All of these will be going into a RME Multiface into NUENDO

These are our choices. As far as compressors go, we will be using the RNC going in, and then the UAD-1 1176's once the musics in the computer. I realize that the Grace will be great in a clear honest kind of way, but I hear so much talk of the "Rock" pre's like the Neve and API's I just wonder if I should get something with more "balls" if you will.

Thier first album was done at "Bear creek" studio's in Seattle (foo Fighters, James Brown)all through tape. I would kind of like to keep a similar feel, and I feel that going from all analog and Neves, to digital and Grace may be a little extreme.

I have the Grace and I use it for all my "cleaner stuff" like overheads and vox and some acoustic guitars ect. I also have the MPA I use it on my Heavy guitars it can be ok ..I just try to keep it in the clean range..Or to me it gets too muddy..I have a Vintech1272{1200.00} on order and its takeing forever but since I don't have it and havent used it extensively all I can say is check it out...Good luck
