Question Md8 tracks to Comp

Here is my "dilema".

1. I have songs on the MD8 using all 8 tracks.
2. I have a (cheap) version of Cakewalk.
3. I have a (cheap) soundcard with only 1 1/8" IN.

Is there a way I can get the 8 individual tracks from the MD8 onto Cakewalk in one shot? That's right in one shot. Like I hit a couple of buttons and 4 minutes later I have 8 individual tracks to "mixdown/master" using Cakewalk.

I know I can use the individual outs of each track and assign them to different tracks within Cakewalk - but doing this with 8 tracks (or more) at 4+ minutes for each track...well I hope you get the picture.

If I need other equipment, then what equipment would I need to do this while still keeping the MD8, version of Cakewalk and soundcard I have?

Let's forget the posts like "Your real dilema is using the MD8 and Cakewalk" and the like.

Please explain any technical posts like you are talking with an idiot....b/c basically I am

Your screwed. I had this dilemma too.

Its going to be painful, but not impossible.

If your soundcard had midi ability then you can use the MTC of the MD8 to drive the Cakwalk. You can only transfer 1 track at a time though with your sound card. So its 4 minutes times 8 tracks. You will want to pan the tracks hard left and right so that you can 2 tracks at a time a cut your time down. Ive done this before from my MD8 to N-tracks on some older songs. If you absolutely need to 8 tracks at one shot then you will need a Delta 1010 or better breakout box AD/DA to plug the MD8's direct outs into. Thats probably going to cost $800 on average.

So.....

The M-AUDIO Delta 1010 PCI Digital Audio System has 8 ins/outs and comes with a "rackmountable chassis and outboard power transformer" for around $600.00.

The M-AUDIO Delta 1010LT PCI Digital Audio System has 10 ins/outs but it is "only" a soundcard for $289.00.

Both would have enough inputs to record an 8 track song in one shot and keep all 8 tracks seperate for future mixdown/mastering.

Ever use these or another interface?

If this works it would be ideal for me because:
#1 - I am able to keep the MD8 (and it's portability)
#2 - I won't have to worry about running out of MD Data disks, b/c I will still have 8 seperate tracks after transfer.
#3 - This interface will work well for other analog gear I have.

Yes, either will work great. I don't have either of them, but I have an Audiophile 24/96 card. If you got either of these cards or the rackmount, you could even skip using the md8 except when transferring tracks after a remote recording. You just go straight to the delta to the PC. Lots of flexability.

On my latest recording, that's not done yet, I had to / have to do one track at a time....I just use RCA's out of the master out....then get an adapter to go into my shitty 1/8 input on my sound card.....at the beginning of each track, I turn the drums on which have 4 stick counts or whatever...then line the tracks up to the click waves. I 'track' with CEP...then mix with Cubase SX. I've had this dilemma, and as far as I know, there is no alternative route. Later. Greg.
