Need info on CEP 2

I saw that Cool Edit Pro 2.0 can record 128 tracks. Well, my computer has a pentium 3 processor (i think it like 667mhz ), 196mb or ram and a 10gb hard drive with windows ME. How many tracks do you think that i can record before it starts droping-out and frezing up and stuff. And what are the diffurent things in cool edit pro 2.0 that cool edit pro 1.0 don't have? Does cool edit pro 2.0 have all of the things that cool edit pro 1.0 has?

I don't really need to know how many tracks you can record at the same time. I record all my audio on my Fostex Vf16 and because the eq and effects suck on it, i'm gonna start sending the clean audio from my vf16 to my computer via scsi and mix and edit them in CEP 2. I was wanting to know, how many tracks could your record, compress, revurb and eq before the computer starts droping out.

Well I am still using a Pentium II at 433, 10 gig drive and Windows 98SE. I have not had a problem so far only recording 25 or so tracks. It does go a bit slow with more tracks but it gets the job done. The only real problem I have had is the real time effects tend to really be processor hungry. Cool Edit 2000 has only 4 tracks so you would be better off to get Cool Edit 2.0 or 2.1 now.

Well CE2.0 allows for real time effects to be added to the tracks with out acually changing the original wav files.

Well the real time effect thing is applying the effect as you are playing the tracks but it doesn't make any permanent changes to the .wav file itself and can be removed at any time.

You could also go to the tracks one by one and add an effect in edit view but that is physically altering the .wav itself. That effect would be permanent after you close and save your session.

Well, like i said, i would be uploading my tracks from my vf16 into the computer and then adding effects later, so i don't think that i will have to worry about that.

Zeke, what he means by real time effects is say you wanted to have reverb on you snare track in Cool Edit Pro.

You could either select the snare track and apply the reverb in the edit mode in CEP or...

you could place the reverb on the track in multitrack mode which doesn't actually affect you original snare track

With the first method after you apply the reverb and save the file and exit you can't come back later on and change the type of reverb or take it off unless you had save a dry snare track somewhere else.

The second method which is real time effects lets you come back later on and allows to change the reverb that you put before or turn it off if you don't like it, all the while leaving you original snare track untouched.

Well, like i said, i would be uploading my tracks from my vf16 into the computer and then adding effects later, so i don't think that i will have to worry about that.

You actually will because you will be uploading dry tracks from your fostex and then you will have the choice to either apply one of the two methods mentioned above for effects.

So, is real time effects like a effect bus with sends and stuff. that's how my vf-16 is.

Yeh pretty much.
It's like have AUX sends or effects sends on each channel. This means you can send the signal to the effects. You can even adjust the order of the effects.eg compressor 1st, reverb 2nd

Well, Scottboyher's Computer is a P. 11 and myne will be a P. 111 so, maybe it won't effect the real time effects when i record a great number of tracks. i don't thing that i will record over 24. but incease i have to, the're there if i need them.

You mentioned that you only have a 10GB hard drive. You'll probably want more space. Once you start getting a few songs on there you'll really fill it up quick.

If your budget allows get a 40GB or more 7200RPM (fast speed) Hard Drive. Then you can use the 10GB for you system files and your other one just for audio.
