DAC-1 users?

For those who are currently using the Benchmark DAC-1, how are you liking it? What converters are you replacing with the DAC, and how would you describe the qualitative difference?

At $700 street it seems like a no-brainer, but I'm also hearing good previews of the soon to be released Apogee miniDAC. (about $100 more).

Hey Littledog. I spent time over at Glenn Meadows Mastering Engineers website reading what the ME's are saying about it. Alot of the big names are getting them.

Its really tempting for me...next year maybe.

Lovin' it.

Echo Layla, as well as the converters in my Tascam and Marantz CD players/recorders.

Ooh. That's tough to do without sounding like an advertisement or some cheezeball review. I'd use words like "tighter", "clearer", "more solid", "deeper", "more detailed". Not much help, I know.

If you have the cash and the inclination now, I doubt that there is any point in waiting for the Apogee. At best, I suspect that it will be on par with the Benchmark. I doubt that it would be better. The DAC-1 is a really nice unit (the headphone amps are really good too; extremely low noise).
