When I am applying effects to a track it takes a while to kick in! HELP!

Specifically, I am EQing my bass drum track, then hard limiting it, then compressing it. The ENTIRE track is selected and when I apply the effect the track shows that it has been effected by it but it waits around 20 seconds to kick in!

What's wrong?!

The purpose of a cable is to get stuck under everything in its path.
