Help me avoid unnecessary GAS: XP-50 vs JV 1010

Question for the knowledgeable. I've got an XP-50 on loan from a friend. Actually, the loan terms are quite generous as I have it for about a year (or 2). I'm using the GM compatibility for doing the Logic tutorials, and will use the synths drum, organ, and bass sounds for my small project studio.

My question is about the Roland JV 1010. There's a used one being sold for around $450 Cdn. Knowing I won't have the XP-50 forever, would I be smart to get the JV 1010??? There seems to be about twice the number of patches, although I'm not sure presets are worth spending money over.

Also, I'm not using the XP-50 in a live situation. Primarily as a sound module. I've even got a separate midi controller for when I lose the XP-50.

Buy the JV 1010 now, or wait and replace the XP-50 down the road...?

I got my JV1010 brand new or $250 (us) and even though I use it almost everyday and would find it hard to work without, I'm still kinda dissapointed in it. Maybe becuase I set my expectations to high high I think.

Sounds decent and works great but the programming sucks. I bought it with the intention of using the included sotfware to create new patches so I wouldn't have to be stuck with the factory patches. Well the software that came with it sucks bad... I feel like a 80 year old man trying to see the tiny little buttons and cluttered up functions on the screen.That's about my only gripe and I think there might be some other software out there I could use.

I would pay more than $300 (US) for another JV1010 though. Even though it's a nice chunk of sounds in a small package not being able to see patch the names on the screen and adjust effects parameters and what not is a pain. I see a lot of times people decide to go with an JV1080 over a JV1010... I think it's suppoesed to be better sounds quality and maybe because o similar grips as mines.

Depends on what you need, really.

If you've already got sequencing capabilities, the JV1010 would be the way to go (provided you also have a controller of some kind as well)

JV1010 includes session expansion board which is worth its weight in gold. XP-50 doesn't. You could always purchase the session expansion, but why pay more if you already have sequencing capabilities and a controller?

The JV1010 will not sound nearly as good as the XP50. They use different A/D converters.

JV1010 sounds fantastic. I own an XP80 (looking to dump it - might have to give it away or something - I'm trying to be creative about it) but if it wasn't for the sequencer and expansion slots, I could find no reservation for swapping for a JV1010 - if that's the only thing I was investigating.

Honestly, I wouldn't even be looking at this older technology, but rather the new XV stuff (Maybe an XV2020 if that's in your price range)

The XP80 served its purpose for awhile, but two XV5080's later, I have no need for it. I've A B'd the 80 with a 1010 and wouldn't cry a tear if I had to swap the two.

How did you buy a JV1010 for $250? I bought mine for $400.00 14 months ago. You lucky Dog!!!

As no one has really given a compelling reason to take the JV 1010 over the XP-50, I think I'll stick with the latter for now. Plus, I have the use of it indefinately for free. Perhaps that was my friend's creative way of getting rid of it and justifying something newer...
