Talkin' Smack Revisited

Alright, some of you may remember this tune from before, but I've completely re-recorded it now that I know how to use my 8-track better. Let me know what you think...

Again, it's: Acoustic guitars, Bass, Drums/bongos/shakers, Voice...

Qenn is on a distinguished road
first, fantastic song. singer's voice seems pretty spot-on. good hook

i'm not a big fan of the panning of the acoustic guitars in the beginning. its seems like they're panned hard right/left? it just seemed to me there was too much separation

Also, there sounds like there's a really good kick sound buried in there somewhere, so i want to hear more of it. I'd say bring it up a tad in the mix.

QENN: Hey thanks for the feedback!

I didn't used to be a big fan of the heavy panning until I listened to how a lot of the music I like was mixed, and They all had it. I think when it's just the two guitars it's a lot more obvious, but when the bass kicks in, I think it kind of balances out. Thanks for the advice though...

Yeah, there is a decent kick in there, but I seem to never get that loud enough. As you can probably tell, those were programmed drums, I just need to tweak the setting for the different pieces.

Thanks again!

The link isn't working right now (page wouldn't load). I'll try back later.

huh...

TRIPLEM: Not sure...it worked for me just fine. Just so you know, that link I provided will take you to a web page with links (which are the songs). If you were to just click on one of those song links, I believe it will just start to download...it won't load a page. I'm not sure if that's what you were talking about or not. You might just need to find it where ever it is your browser downloads things if you didn't specify earlier.

Sounds really full, clean, and stereo now. You pulled up an easy 10 to 15% more out of that tune man. Very nice..

hey nice song! i like it a lot. very good groove and very hook laden!

crits:

1. the percussion (specifically the congas/bongos) is a little dry compared to everything else.

2. don't like the vocal doubling

So you using the B1 on all this stuff?

TRIPLEM: Did you ever get in?

TWIST: Hey thanks again! Now that I know how to do the mixing, bouncing down and mastering on my recorder, I can get a smoother sound, so I figured it was worth the trouble again. thanks!

TOKI987: Thanks Ken! Like I said above, understanding how to actually use my recorder over the past month or so has really help give my tunes an extra kick.

ERICHENRYUS: Thanks for the positive comments and feedback! I've gotten that Jack Johnson comment before on some tunes...I'm actually a big fan of his. I think what kind of hooked me on him was the fact that some his stuff actually kind of reminded me of my own.

I've actually got the same reverb on all the percussions, so I'm not quite sure why that would seem dryer. I guess I can always turn it up on those. As for the vocal doubling...you don't like it on the verses, chorus or everywhere? I think it helps the chorus, but might distract from the verse.

And yeah, I've been using the Studio Projects B1 on the Voice and Guitars. I've found it to be pretty solid for such a cheaper mic, and the fact is, I'm WAY too poor to have an expensive mic.

Thanks guys! Any other comments out there?

I'm really digging my B1's. I wouldn't know what to do with an expensive mic but these are exactly what I was looking for so far.

They seem to not have any of that sizzly shit that I hear in a lot of other mics. Everyone else calls that 'air'.
