Mixing with Studio 32

I am recording everything right into my Motu 828 and into sonar but I would like to do the mixing on the Studio 32. I tried this last night and did not have any luck! This freaking board is so complicated and the manual sucks. I had my outputs of my soundcard going into the tape in jacks, and than hooked the main outs back into channels 1 and 2 on the 828, and thought I had all the buttons where they are supposed to go but when I try to listen with the headphones using the headphone jack all I hear is a buzzing! And when I finally could hear what I wanted , I couldnt control any of the tracks using the faders or eq! I either have a faulty board or I have a stupid button somewhere thats in the wrong position! I have a mackie cfx-20 that is simple to use but my band uses that for practice and for shows so I dont want to unhook that just to use it for mixing! uhhhhhhh!

The tape in jacks on each channel are for inline monitoring while you are tracking. the inline mon. section is in the middle? part of the channel strip.
If there is a (flip) switch on each channel, press this, or repatch the outs of your 828 into the line ins on the individual channels of the mixer, now you will have full control of signal(EQ, levels).

This should do, unless the board is malfuncky.
More Help? DO a hey MUTTLEY!

In my opinion this is wrong...The tape ins are exactly that = tape ins....so that's where you plug your outputs from your tape once you recorded your tracks onto the tape (in your case MOTU 828)...you should still be able to have full control of your signals that go through tape ins, but it's hard to say how because I'm not familiar with that particular board...
When you hook your main outs back intot he 828, make sure that signal from your main outs doesn't pass through the computer and goes back into the board....in this case you would create the loop and have feedback, which you're probably hearing through your headphones. Anyway, main outs should be connected to your amp or powered monitors...BTW, are you plugging the headphones into your board's h/phone jack or 828's....
However, you can pluf the 828 outs into line ins as well, as mutt suggested, but you would usually have line ins on your board available for plugging instruments into them while tracking (if tracking through the board, and into the 828).....
To cut the long story short....:
Plug the 828's outs into the mixers tape ins and listen through your phones plugged into the board's h/phone jack or through your loud speakers....

I hope this helps

P.S. can you take a pic of your channel strip and post it!?

This is what I was getting at.. where did I go wrong in my explanation?
Any time you are inline monitoring, you are using the tape in on each channel.

nope sorry can't take a photo of the channel strip, but you might be able to go to the alesis website and see if its on there! The manual page 14 shows the monitoring signal path pretty well, I didnt have the manual in my hands when I was trying to do this so I think that is my first problem haha! I had it hooked up the way you guys are saying, and had my headphones plugged into the boards jack, but I bet I had a button pressed somewhere that I wasnt supposed to have pressed. I am going to try it tonight again. thanks

I have both the 32 & 24 boards and the "tape-ins" are used for monitoring tracking.
The 32 must be switched to "MONITOR MODE": insure all channel
switches below the "purple" monitor pot is in the up position.
Channel Gain is accomplished by turning the purple knob to clockwise to monitor signal while Master Gain Ctl is located on rite side of board, also purple in the "Control Section". Insure that the
"MONITOR" switch is in the down pos located in the CTL section.
Patch the 828's outs into the "tape in's" of the 32 and you should be good to go!
There are other ways to monitor tracking, but it's late, I'm a lil' nice from drinkin' brewski's and gotta' go to bed!
Holla' back if you're still stumped!

mutt...when you said "atch the 828 outs into line ins"...that's when I thought that line ins shouldn't be used for tape returns....I didn't mean that it can't work, but usually you would patch your recorders outs into tape ins on the mixer.....
NP...I'll stay out of it...sorry for any confusion this caused

cheers

Ok now this is starting to make more sense! I tried it last night and got it to work but not the way you described it, but I was also getting lots of noise and not alot of volume so my mix downs were pretty useless! But I didnt touch any of the purple pots as you describe. Will I still be able to use the master channel faders during this? Maybe you missunderstood my question or had to many beers? hehe but I don't want to monitor tracking I want to mix down to 2 tracks and be able to use the faders and eq. Maybe this is accompolished the same way you are describing I dont know!

I did have alittle more luck when I ran the 828 out's to the line in's on the board, I still got some noise but I got a hotter 2 track signal going back to the 828. I know this noise is coming from the board cause I can hear it in the headphones even when playback has stopped! that is why I think that I am not doing something right or have a crap board! thanks for the help guys, I will keep trying!

Let's take it by track;

When you are monitoring input thru channel 1, what switches do you have depressed on the channel?

For ex., if you are tracking on 1-AFL(after fader listen) the direct-out switches s/b in the "UP"position. Signal will flow thru both EQ and Fader and thru boards MASTER.
If you are using the "GRP ASSIGN", channels GRP switch s/b depressed; same going for the "GRP" switches in "CTL RM".

Again just using chan 1, what mode/or switches are incorporated
where you are now hearing audio?(same goes for "CTL RM").

I also forgot to tell you last nite that putting board in "MONITOR" position is Pre-Fader-Listen!!!
