Lightbulb Collaboration with Gidge

Hi people,

Mr X now gets the Gidge treatment as promised. I think he told me there's like 10 separate guitar tracks he sent me mixed as 3 stereo files. I picked and chose the bits I liked on the weekend (90% of them) and now the new mix is up. Sounds heaps better.

Tell us what you think.

coolio

Good production guys...good tune too....Tom Petty kind of hook...very well put together...in a songwriting sense....

one nit... lead guit sounds just a tad too far to the rear of the mix....sort of too far away...ya know?

Likin' the tune gentleman....fuckin' Aye ....

Yea I know what you mean ... it's 80's style reverb city !! LOL

Perhaps I subconciously created a metaphore to show how Gidge lives in the US and me in Australia ?

But seriously..Thanks for the encouragement .. will think about the reverb level .. what do others think ?

Wow,

The electric geetar makes a huge difference!

Nice blend of tones and mix between acoustic, electric and crunch.
They flow real seamlessly.

Gidges licks really sear!!!
I like the verb!

This has come a long way dres.
Nice job!

Thumbs up

I like the guitar licks. I'm not wild about most of the guitar tones though. I think everthing is well played though.

Lead sounds like it's in a different room than the rest of the song.

I still like the song & really like the direction it's heading.

Nice work!

Yikes...I just noticed I'm the only one that had a complaint about the guitar tones. I am listening in cans... Maybe just ignore me if I'm way out of whack here.

I think there's too much dirt on the rhythm guit. during the chorus. That type of distortion or tone reminds me more of the real modern grungy tone, but the song has got a classy rock sound to it IMHO.

The song is very cool, listening to it a second time right now?

Real nice job guys!

Nice harmonies going on man...
I didnt listen to the "ungidged" tune but I like this one.
I cant hear what these guys are talking about, the electrics being in another room and such, but thats probably my newbie ears listening. I cant find anything to bitch about!...

The mix is ok overall but the bass is totally mucky and wanky and all sorts of words that end in "y" Very odd. Is maybe the bass tuned to the wrong key?

Good vocal work, nice guitars.

Am I hearing the whole mix get louder and quieter in parts...or maybe just the drums? Something is odd dynamically.

Good songwriting!

It's true I've found tuning the bass a real pig of a job ... help me out can you be a little more specific ? Is there some magic trick for fixing bass (or accidentally wrecking it). I'm a bit of a newbie when it comes to bass.

No you are kinda right .... some of the guitar tracks gidge gave me were "pre verbed" I added more to try and blend it with everything else which is partly why there is so much verb going on. The verbs are however not the same.

Any comments Gidge ?

Thanks ... "classy rock" .. now I know how to describe my music !!

Guitar tone is a very personal thing... in fact I think it's extremely hard to pick just the right tone. I thought the tone Gidge chose was OK and it definately added to the song. But sure it's always possible to do better. But this isn't rocket science, just having fun. Don't get me wrong I really appreciate the feedback though. Thanks for listening mate.

Cheers

Cool

David, good job mixing the parts in....

As noted in PM's I really struggled with finding a tone for the chorus that would blend in with the acoustic.....Im really surprised you went with the distorted part....i might have went more with the cleaner part and just tucked the distorted part right under.....

on the lead, i only used some delay...it seems the verb on top of it is giving it a "different room" sound.....

i wish i would have had more time to work on a better part, but i wanted it done before the war was over

you did a real good job considering what you were given......

it was really refreshing for someone to make their statement with art instead of a picket sign or BBS flaming........

Similar thoughts were in my mind too !

Glad you liked the mix... it took about 2.5 hrs of cutting and pasting.. drawing volume curves etc. .. all good fun. Thanks for taking the time to record your parts. Syncing the parts in the first place had to be done manually. I think next time you better include some snippet of my original track, from either the begining or end, to help me sync it up .. that was tricky to do (but good ear training !)

So Mike, do you like the verb or is it too much ?

I listened to the whole thing as a package first, then went back with the goggles on . Tune is really alive sounding, I like the way it wakes up real bright, right in the beginning and keeps it up. Gidge, IF I ever get my lazy overworked butt out to the parrish, first crawfish ettouffe at Ralph and Kackoos is on me dude . There was a bit of flavor difference in the guitar trax but it still sounded real nice.......

nice song..

it sounds like the bass player is hitting a bad note, and he keeps hitting it.. when the song kicks in the bass gets too low.. Maybe that was to cover up the bad note.. I don't think it sounds out of tune, bit I do think he's hitting a wrong note consistently.. If it wasn't for that, I would say turn up the bass.. That's my major complaint..

good collab!

Overall: good sound. I like the lead guitar coming from a far distance. Anyway, good job!

One thing:

I hear bass frequencies, but it kinda ends there...some definition would be nice. How to fix it? No idea, I have to hear it first!

O, the 'odd' note in the bass is a F# under (or is it on? damn english!) a D major chord. It's not wrong, but I would personally play the root here...as you've already noticed, it draws attention to the least good part in your song (soundwise)

Im still not sure about the verb on the lead, the rest is cool.....it may grow on me.......

theres a part that goes A - E/G# - D/F# - E , is that where the bass appears off?
