Ok guys,

I really appreciate all the info on got on my last thread.

I have a couple of questions. I am thinking about purchasing a used ADAT XT . ( Do to buget) What things should I look out for when purchasing a used adat. I know to ask about how many hours, but is there anything else I should look out for?

also, I've never used one of these, If later I want to expand and add another adat down the line, can you just hook up a wire, will they sync together, or is there more equiptment needed to sync two adat's together. If so, what?

If you can,audition the thing in their studio. Play a tape checking that all channels work, also in rec. mode. Alesis makes a fibre optic cable to conect up too 16 units( fire wire).
Lift up the door to see inside the condition of the heads, I take the top cover off and give the belts, circuit boards, bearings, wheels the eagle eye. If you can move the wheels and make sure their solid.
This may sound extreme, but I've always done this with every mechanical in my studio!
Didn't finish the first part: the fibre optic allows you to sync the signals together if you are going digital; also there's a D-ring type of cable used to control all units from one machine/remote.
This makes up the master/slave configuration. This cable hass to be purchased seperately.
The owners manual covers all this juicy stuff in great detail. Alesis writes one of the best manuals in the industery!!
Master/slave: you program the machines with an identity number so each machine knows who's boss/order they operate in.
All this is really easy to grasp/understand if you take time to read manual, it's a fairly easy read.
