Punching in using Cubase SX

Hello,

Can anyone explain to me how to punch in manually on Cubase SX? I arm the tracks, press play, and then record when I want to start overwriting the original track. Is that all you have to do? The problem is if I enable the tracks for monitoring I can not hear what the musician needs to be playing along with before punching in, and if I do not enable monitoring I can not hear him play after I start recording. Please help.

ahh...screw it, don't hit record...just hit play...it will start recording once you get to the selection.

I did a couple searches before I posted and all I found about punching in related to Cubase VST. I couldn't find anything on SX.

you can actually punch in automatically...enable record, use the blue marker along the top to highlight the area to be recorded, and on either side of the loop button there are 2 buttons w/ symbols that look like a slope down on the left and a slope up on the right (punch in and out respectively). Highlight these and hit play. It will punch in/ out for you!!!

Look in the manual for the part that explains the use of the Number Keypad. The number pad is the easiest way to navigate cubase SX. e.g. "enter" is play "0" is stop, "." is return to beginning, and the numbers refer to your markers.

Anyway, the button on the Numberpad to arm record is the "*" key. Hit "enter" to start playing, and then while it is playing hit * to start recording. Hit * again to stop recording...it will continue to play until you hit stop.
