line-in question

recently bought a Tascam 488 over the Internet after several years on a 4-track. I was surprised to find that the 488 only has two "mic/line in" inputs. is there any low-cost way I can boost the signal on my mics and pickups to line level so that I can just patch them into the 488 and have them register?

you'd need an outboard preamp, here's a cheap one:

Yo Hulk:

I just popped into my storage room to look at my retired 488; but, I have the MKII and it has 4 mic line inputs.

I just wonder if you plugged in a synth to one of your inputs if the volume on the synth, plus the fader, would give you enough punch?

Otherwise, the pre-amp is what you would need.
