mic stands and monitors.

hey..i just decided to build my own mic stand out of an old broom handle, pvc pipes, an old plastic tupperware container and concrete mix to weight it down. if anyone wants details email me mikequilling03@hotmail.com and i'll draw it out for you.

also...whats a half-way decent set of monitors? like in the $150-200 range (for a pair, not each)...those ma-8's look SO small and worthless for even that much money, it seems you may as well save up a while longer. thats just my amateurs.opinion. i understand when mixing it doesnt need to be loud, but just..$60 for those thing.

I will prolly get flamed ....but....

I have the Fostex set (the 2.1 i think) which are a small powered pair with a sub.
Someone comented elsewhere that they look and therefore must sound as bad as computer monitors.

I can tell you that they definitely sound MUCH better than computer monitors and have served me well (for now).

They are $199 for the set.

No monitors at $200 a set are going to rival a set big thousand dollar monitors but i found these to be a big step up from the stereo speakers I had been using.

Just 2 cents about the mic stand......I used to build my own but you can find stands for 10-15 bucks if you work your local stores and for the lack of hassle to build, move, adjust, and store,.....its worth the investment.
Its like cables......it is sometimes hard to justify the cost of good stuff that isnt your guitar or amp or mic....but the less time you spend moving sandbags around or fiddling with sketchy cords, the more time you can spend playing and recording.

Its worth it......but you gotta start somewhere, right?

Actually......

that Fostex set someone commented on (in Mixing and Mastering) is the 3.1 set. (sorry forgot to copy the link)

It looks like the same sub but the speakers are different than mine. Those look like even smaller plastic enclosers than mine have.
They kind of do look like computer monitors.

But.....those are only $100.
I think the set I have is still available for $200.
