What Am I Doing?

Hey Peeps!

I have this thing I do whereby I take a mono track (say, rhythm guitar) and feed it through a short delay with the original signal going to one side of the mix and the delayed signal going to the other.
What I want to know is:
1: Is there a name for this trick?
2: I currently use a pre fader aux send to feed the delay. Might it be better to use some kind of direct out or even the channel insert send on the original track?
That last one was just me pondering aloud.

The trick you are doing is similar to a trick they call a "spreader".
A spreader is where you would take a mono vocal (or guitar in your case) put the mono signal down the center, send the signal(usually on a post fader send) to a stereo delay with the right side at say 35 msec and the left side at say 50 msec (they have to be different to make the effect) to really fatten and spread the main sound you are focusing on.

The reason for the post fader send is you want the amount of send going to the delay to stay propotional to the volume of the main signal in case you are making volume changes.

I have to do it mono because I only have a mono delay (old analog bucket brigade type). I would like to try it in stereo, but that'll have to wait until I can afford a second Effects unit.

It is best to learn and work with what you got!
GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) is a hard disease to deal with.
