a good rock bass sound!

hi
how you guy record your bass?
D.I., amp w/ mic?
I've tried both and I cant say I'm happy with the sound, always lacks definition,
maybe is the bass(tobias)

Fender Jazz w/ Dimarzio Ultra Jazz pickups, into a Bass POD- both outputs into a PreSonus MP20 preamp.

BTW- you should get a lot of definition going DI. It could be your strings, changing to a different brand/type might help.

Peavy Foundation with new strings (slightly broken in) into a Zoom 506II into an Art Tube pre. I also use a pick.

Hey - your Tobias isn't the problem. Try this $70 stealth DI :

Buy yourself an ART Tube MP... it's one of the warmest, roundest, phattest sounding bass DI's around. You'll get plenty of definition too. Many great studios use this but won't talk about it (or admit it).

i don't go direct only. i use my mesa/boogie d-180 out of an ampeg 4x10 (the one with the silver handle and bass port, not the little one, their low end response sucks). mic that with a d112, run the bass through a sansamp direct. mix the two, di gives the bite, amp give the fat warm tone.

I find pretty new strings are a must (I like DR hi-beams), and if nothing else a good parametric eq can do wonders.
I focus on mid range and not so much boomy low end.

Good luck

F.S.
PS I run direct some times and threw an amp with a mic sometimes. Just got a new bass and I think I will be using an amp with mikes.

ok, so in you opinion, to record direct
sansamp DI, POD, J station, or ART, an why?

the POD or J-station will be more userfull than a DI, because its simulates diferent amp models (I think)

Bongo - Well, being a guitar player, I didn't have any real preconceived noton of a specific tone, so I use the Modern, British, and Rock factory presets. They all sound pretty good to my untrained ear- I haven't messed around with swapping speaker cabs or anything...
