Compliment to EMU XL7?

So i've bought the XL7, and am not happy with the sound set. I am with the sequencer and effects. This box is loaded and peforms well as nerve center of a studio. But I'm shooting to more of a ambient dark soundscape trancey feel. I love pads, lots of them. I am considering getting a Triton LE, I have played those in a store and like them. But then again, i'm just paying for another sequencer and so forth. I'm wondering if perhaps there is something in the middle i'm missing? A module or synth sans a sequencer that will give what I seek?

Hmm..

thanks in advance,

are you looking for hardware only, or how about soft synths? i use absynth and crystal (which is free) and both are excellent at creating very strange pad/soundscapes, etc.

there is also the new atmosphere softsynth. can't think of the company who makes it right now, but it is supposed to be geared toward ambient textures and pads and that sort of thing.
