Cakewalk question from new user

As the title states I'm pretty new to all this so bear with me.
I'm using cakewalk 9, system is AMD 1000mhz, 128mb sdram, windows 2k, and a regular home soundcard (not pro audio).
The problem: I can record and playback just fine, but when I try to record a track while listening to another track there are syncronization problems. When I play it back, the two will be together just fine for the first 30 seconds or so but as more time passes they become noticably out of sync. Now, I have a US-428 on the way, so if this is a problem with my sound card I'm not concerned, I won't be using it much longer. However if its a problem somewhere else in my system (not enough memory? etc) I'd like to get it rectified as soon as possible. Or maybe there is some quick fix such as changing a setting somewhere? Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Is the clock-source set to audio (Options -> Project -> Clock, and luck under Source)?

I had the same problems with my XP2000, 512 megs, 60 gig computer. I followed the Windows xx "optimization" procedures with much success. Let me know. I can send you the attachment.

I had to make sure, because SB Live! often associated with regular card, but I think I never heard this sync problem occur on SB Live! Come oooon, don't be shy, what's your "regular" card ?

I was about to post and ask if a complete novice to Cakewalk could find some help somewhere when I saw IEatSoup's post. I'm obviously more of a newbie than him/her -- I mean, when I open Cakewalk, I'm immediately lost, totally clueless.

My past (and current) recording has been with a 4-track minidisc, but since I have a copy of Cakewalk ProAudio 9.0, I wanted to start learning how to use it.

Any suggestions?

Moskus, yeah I've tried setting the clock source to just about everything I think with no noticable result.

Khaki, that sounds good, send it along if you don't mind but I use 2000 not XP, does that make a difference

James Argo, the card isn't on-board, it is a Monster Sound I beleive, a PCI "gamers" card I guess. I got it a few years ago but I think I remember it being marketed as comparable to the SB Live model that was out then.
This problem is actualy fairly new for me. Cakewalk used to work fine but then my processor died and I had to get a new one. It was a fairly big upgrade (300 mhz to 1000), so a performance drop was pretty unexpected, but I also changed the motherboard so maybe that has something to do with it.

IEatSoup, there are many possibillities on your case (out of sync). They could be :

• Your sound card's driver.
• Sharing IRQ (resource) with other devices in your comp.
• More RAM please...
• Have you tried replace the card to another PCI slot ?
• HD too slow. Needs 7200rpm.
• ...and many more possibillities.
