MOOG Opus 3!

Does anyone else have this?? This is one nice piece of gear. I love how it's vintage and it's not made anymore. Is anyone a fan of the Rentals?? The sounds that come from this machine, are ust one-of-a-kind. Anyone else out there a user of this product or a Moog in general???

I've played them before. Almost bought one more than once. I love Moog, wish I had never sold my Moog.

Hey MusicMan-

Most of the sweet moog leads you hear on the Rentals records are not from the Opus 3, they're from the Moog Source. The Source is a 2 VCO analog synth, but has space for 8 programmable presets, which are sweet.

The Opus-3 has like three sections-Brass, Organ, and Strings I think- check out sonicstate.com for more detailed info. I think it sounds more like a combo organ sent through a filter.

If you listen to Seven More Minutes- the drone tone throughout the background of (before 0:35), that's the Opus-3:

It's a Moog, but it's capability for Sound design are seriously limited

All the leads on the first record (Friends of P, Waiting on You) are the Source. The horn sound on track nine in the background is the Opus 3

On Seven More Minutes, the leads are an ARP Oddysey and the Source, and most of the effects and bombs and junk are the Oddysey...

If you're just raving at the sweetness of the Rentals records- they rock....alot...Seven More Minutes is one of the most interesting and entertaining records I own.

If you're looking to buy, go for the Source, or the Prodigy at the lower end..the memorymoog and the delectable MiniMoog will give you more control, but most of the indie 'moog-rock' bands use the Prodigy or the Source (Hippos, Deathray, Weezer) or the Korg MS-20( dandy warhols, 2 skinee j's) I think synthmuseum.com has a feature to search what artists use various synths

Stay away from the Micromoog- it has only one oscillator, and sounds desparately thin

Glad to see another Rentals fan...

Rock Out
Chris

Glad to see another "Chris" out there. I currently own the Moog Opus 3. For the price I got it at, it serves me well. In the future, I will probably get more Moog products. With the Opus, I set it so it sounds almost exactly to the same of a song by The Rentals. Did you hear about the dispute between The Rentals and Weezer? Damn, new Weezer not paying royalties.... tsk, tsk, tsk.

Well, what I heard was that the main guy from Rentals, worked with Weezer on their old Blue Album. Now, Weezer isn't paying the guy from Rentals any royalties even though he wrote a bunch of their big songs.

Also, I paid $100 for the Moog Opus 3 that is in perfect condition.

Yeah,

Matt Sharp played bass on both the blue record and Pinkerton...I don't know if he wrote any of the songs, but its a shame. Pat from Weezer also played the drums on Return of the Rentals

Where'd you find an Opus-3 for a hundred bones?

Here's a question: What is the correct way of pronouncing MOOG?? I have heard many different ways.

Rhymes with ROGUE

I used to do it like ROGUE, and then I met some folks who called me an idiot, and said it was MOOOOG, like TUBE...

So I did that for a while- Then I took a physics of music class, and my professor attended a workshop with Bob Moog, who pronounced his own name like ROGUE.

So, I think I'll believe the man itself- though its really hard to change after doing it wrong all these years......

Kinda like proper playing technique
