BR-8 line out -> computer gives me hum

I have a BR-8 and have tried to stereo line out into my computer to mixdown. I was using a cheap stereo RCA cable and was getting a low level hum that was very annoying. it doesn't get louder or softer as you move the "master" slider up or down. just there and ever present.

I went and bought a good quality RCA shielded cable from radio shack hoping it would help, but the hum is still there.

Any ideas how to get rid of it? i even turned off all monitors to see if they were giving interferance, but no dice. I have tried plugging the BR-8 into different outlets too, and still get the problems.

thanks in advance

edit: PS. even if the BR-8 is not turned on I get the hum through the computer.

a side note, if the BR-8 is lined into the AUx of my Stereo, i do NOT get the hum.

edit#2. perhaps its the RCA ins on my computer? its an older powermac that has 16bit RCA in. perhaps they aren;t too goo. I have an extra soundcard that has RCA ins. I'll try it with that.

looks like i got the answer. my internal sound in capabilites were junk. I installed an old Iomega Buz card I had laying around and that gave me a nice clean hum-free connection. now i can finally learn how to do some basic mastering.

Good, I was gonna suggust that you check your soundcard. There is a new company, Griffin Technology (www.griffintechnology.com), selling USB based audio interfaces (soundcards) for $35. I was getting noise from my Soundblaster Live the USB based doesn't have any noise.

It isn't a laptop is it? I know it's a problem with some laptops (including mine ), that you get bad noise from the line out. In my case, it's the actual noise of the computer processing - you can hear when you move the mouse etc. etc.

It makes my computer completely unusable as a sound source of any kind, really
