Recording on the Vf-160
My band finally got the time to record our first tune with the fostex vf-160 and computer, basically everything was done seperately, Used Vegas Video/Soundforge to edit each track. Check it out at
[url]www.hedsteem.com The song is called "The Worm"....Let me know what you think. |

Well Tremors, the download has taken over an hour so far and it's finally up to 91%. LOL Ah, the 56 k Modem. Anyway, I noticed the pics taken at The Coffee Pot last year. You guys from the Roanoke area?
Get back to ya after I listen to the toon. I am using the VF-160/Puter combo. Checkout my toons if ya have a chance. The Thread is on the page here. CR ><>

This is a cool tune, Bro. Like the groove and the guitars Rawk, man. Vox are good too!
How much compression are you running on the drums? They sound over compressed and I think I'm hearing the compressor working which means something there is very overcompressed. I converted it to wave and imported it to n-Track and put a Peak Limiter on the output set to prevent clipping. I ran it up 9db to bring the volume up some. Overall, the mix is good but it's not anywhere near loud enough. CR ><>

Wonder what would be the best way to bring up the Vol without clipping in soundforge?

You need to get those tracks kickin first. Take a listen to my tunes. They ain't the greatest but they are LOUD. And a Pro Master can be twice as loud as those.
http://www.iuma.com/IUMA/Bands/The_Maccabee_Project/ Do you have the VF-160CDR? I notice the question about the Jazz Drive. CR ><>

GO to page 102 of your VF-160 manual......step by step instructions on saving to an SCSI device.(Im sure you've already read it but....) Are you loading files onto your jaz as backups or as files to be imported into your computer for editing on a software program? |

1) Formatted Jaz Disk with Computer Using FAT.
2) Doing Backup to SCSI using WAV file. 3) After further research it looks like it saving the data but not in PCM-Wave Format. (saves as .wav but has no properties about its bitrate ect.) 4) Also Trying to Load any one of the WAV files into Media Player 9. Help! |

Format the disk from your Fostex and start over.
Follow the step-by-step instructions on page 102 of your manual. If it's not saving in wav it must be FDMS format......have you seen the 2 options of "fdms" and "wav" format to choose from in the menu? How are you importing your files into your computer?Do you have an internal Jaz or are you hooking the external one up to the computer after you do the data dump from the VF? |

Yes, I hook the Jaz up to my computer Using ADaptec 2930 Card and It works fine I can see the actual wav files on the jaz...they have th icon for windows media but they have NO properties...
Weird... I do see the FD3MS and WAV on menu..I pick WAV P.S. External JAZ Drive |

P.s. I would still try formatting the disk from the Fostex instead of the computer.Give that a try before you do anything else...also,have you tried to load these files back into the Vf 160 to see if the VF recognizes the files was wav/?

Never Mind..I have Version 1.13 Of the Fostex OS, 1.14 addresses this problem....I hate fostex and their support..

Just load the update file on your jaz and hook it up to your VF and boot the Jaz and Vf at the same time.....it will update automatically without a hitch..takes about 30 seconds....no loss of data and you dont have to reformat....just updates and everything on your Vf hardrive stays in place. |

The worm
The Worm......Nice work. Kickin song. I love it!!
Tell us more about how you did it? Was it played live or overdub? Amps and mics used? Vocal processing? - Is there two singers? How many mics on the drums? How many tracks? Yeah it is a little low in volume, but a little clockwise motion on the preamp vol ctrl solves the problem. Compared to Macabees Headlong blues, it sounds a lot more even, smooth and easier on the ears. Macabees Whirlwind is a nice recording to. Good ballance, nice seperation between instruments. Perhaps a little reverb on the snare would give it more "room" sound. Rock on Brothers.

Well, I have 2 Singers (3 Vocal Trax)
2 Guitarsist using Boss GT-3's running direct. I ran my bass thru a DOD Bass FX. It was our first attempt..we are now micing the drums individually, and running the mix thru Vegas/Soundforge to clean it up..I put an updated version of it up on www.hedsteem.com It addresses the volume issue, We are working on our next tune "Blues, My way" it sounds alot better in my opinion, the Worm is a song we have had for about 9 Years so it was an easy way to test things out, Ill let all of you know when Blues is Completed. Thanks for the support and input. |

Downloading the new version. So you dudes have been together for awhile, huh?
Been working on my two toons, too. Freakin cymbals are too loud on The LORD Is. A Whirlwind is about to be sent off to be mastered by a freind in Alabama. I have three new toons in the making on the Fostex now. Man, that's a BIG IMPROVEMENT. I A/B'd em. Everything is kickin much better. The Guitars stand just a bit more separation, IMHO. Good job! ![]() CR ><>

Axe4Yahweh, how do you prepare your recordings for mastering? Do you just send in your best mix? Do you know anything about the term "uncompressed" when it comes to mastering. I was told by someone that you send in an "uncompressed" copy of your music when sending away for mastering. I understand the concept of mastering but I would like to know more about how to prepare your music for such a service.

I understand why i should leave headroom, but how do I know if my outgoing signal is compressed or not?
