punching-in -- 424

hi.

this is making me really mad. when i set up a punch-in loop on my 424, it punches in perfectly on time, but when it punches-out, there is a half second of silence on the track before it releases it.

in other words, if i play back a guitar track that i punched-in to repair, you'll hear a half second of silence as soon as the repair section is complete, then the original kicks in.

it makes punching-in on tight passages impossible. is there something i'm doing wrong?

which means either you don't punch in/out into such a tight spot, or [what I do], is if I'm obliged to punch in, then I'll continue the punch section 'til the end of the recording.

The gap you hear after punch out is normal, and represents the spot of blank tape between the erase head and the record/play head. It's normal, and there's no way you can avoid it.

Otherwise, maybe you could set the punch-out point to occur where there's a natural pause or gap in the original track. Tight instrumental tracks are particularly unforgiving of punch-outs, due to the audible "gap". Less tight instrumental tracks and vocal tracks are more amenable to punch-outs, where the gap gets concealed in an otherwise open part of the musical phrasing.

It's not you, and you're not doing something wrong. It's just something to be aware of, and to compensate for.
