Get your butt over to Sonic Foundry (I use the link at the bottom of Dragon's Home Page) and download the free beta of Vegas Pro. It's got some really interesting additions to the user interface. If everything works as they claim it will be a contender (though a bit pricey) providing multiple format capability.
It even provides a S/W compressor to play with that seems to work pretty well. i.e. the overall result is a few dB quieter; the loud parts sound just as loud, and the quiet parts are much louder. With no obvious artifacts in the sound.
The beta expires 7/19/99

All of the Cakewalk DirectX plug-ins should work with Vegas.

Theoretically.....
