Getting a good drum recording with these MICs

Hi,

I have a Ludwig kit: a snare, 2 high toms, a floor Tom, Bass Drum a hi-hat and a few cymbals. I have the following Mics:

1 Shure Sm57
2 Shure SM 58s
1 Samson 12
1 Marshall V67 condensor

I will be recording these drums through a Soundcraft Spirit 12 into Ntracks. Just wanted to get an idea of what others thought as far as using these MICs to get the best possible recording. Any suggestions for placement woud be very helpful.

Can anyone help here??? I am not a drummer, but can play a little bit and have a kit. I want to add some live drums rather than use a drum machine. I was thinking of using my Mics as follows:

Shure SM 57 on Snare
Shure SM 58 inside Bass Drum at about 3" from head
Marshall Condensor overhead center
Shure SM 58 near floor tom and air tom under ride cymbal
Samson 12 near other tom an crash


Can anyone offer advice? Is this how most of you would use these mics?

Sounds good, except I would put one of the mics between the two rack toms, and one on the floor tom. You, don't need to worry about positioning the mics near the cymbals on account of the overhead, and depending on positioning, may be able to forgo tom mics altogether. Experiment, experiment, experiment.

although placement is a big part in the sound, processing also helps. do you have a compresser or limiter or effects in your software? use the compressers to get a snapy snare sound and a punchy bass and use the limiter on the overhead to keep the levels under control (if you do use compression on the overhead, then go lightly. you want the cymbals to "flow In".)
