can a good pre help with ADAT's?

I'm recording to an LX20 and am looking at outboard pres, specifically the Great River one channel. My question is, given the limitations in sound quality/converters in the LX20, would I be able to still notice an appreciable difference from using a high end pre?

LX20 + hi-end mic pre

The improvement in sound quality that a well-designed quality mic pre will offer is influenced greatly by other factors, including the recording console, cables, mics, interconnects, outboard gear, and the engineer himself. If YOU use a mic pre and the recorded sound is improved, then that should be the only thing to consider.

I used LX20's for years and their converters won't be a major stumbling block by a long shot. It's converters aren't that bad.

I 2nd that!!

Though the HD24 is now my weapon of choice, I still own a XT & LX as they now function as excellent back-ups of material.
Both units will provide excellent signal-tracking capture provided, as eh91311 prev'ly stated, your gear in the signal chain is processing transparent & clean output to the recorder.

Thanks for the replies. So with the right signal chain, I should improve the sound with a pre like a Great river over my current pres in the studio 24 mixer.

My signal chain would be:
Studio Projects c1 mic
through Mogami XLR cable
through Great River Pre Amp
(RNC sometimes inserted through TRS inserts)
through a patch cable taking 1/4 inch to RCA
into the RCA inserts on the back of the LX tape machine

Would this be a decent chain? I have everything but the pre-amp and wondering if given my current set-up, whether a high end pre-amp is worth it.

Your use of the Great River pre over the 24's pre alone is worth it!!

I too own, but no longer use the 24 as the board while designed
poorly but offering decent operation is equipped with pre's that are average & dull with a rated pad of only 16dbu max-out.
