Hey...my post didn't show up, so I'll try it again...
I use Cubase VST 24/4.1 with a Mac G3. It's really cool...the radio station I work at uses ProTools with a Mac as well. I've tried it, and it seems to have a steeper learning curve, and isn't as intuitive or as easy to just start it up and record....
If you can clarify "bend and shape" sound for me, I might be able to help you Also, check out steinberg.net, I think they have demos of the different versions of Cubase they offer. I picked up my copy of VST for $299 from soundchaser music in CA. I got a great deal because I'm a student, but their regular prices are really good too. Good luck!
