Preamp/EQ Question

I have a pair of Audix 35102 preamps w/ EQ.
It has the exact same EQ frequency points as a Neve 33114.
Will the 2 pre's sound nearly identical?

I'm not sure if they use the same transformers, I think they do.

Also, the Neve 33114 is a class A/B, and I think the Audix's are pure class A.

If I'm not mistaken, the Audix team consisted of previous Neve employees.

I don't have an exact answer for you but more of an opinon.
I could try and look at the schematics if I can locate them but the real answer is you'd have to listen to them.

If I remember correctly Calrac, Audix and Neve were competting for broadcast hardware for the BBS. And so they have a tendency to be some what close using some of the same direction.

Audix is a great peice of hardware enjoy it.

My suggestion to you would be to look towards an API or something I consider a steal - a RCA pre. I know that at the time Stephan Sank was selling a pair already racked of BA-31's for $800. I own a pair myself and consider them nothing short of amazing !. I would give him a call and see what he has to offer.

Shailat - Thanks for the input.
I guess I should have known the answer would be listen to it and see.

I really enjoy the Audix 35102's, and I know where I can get another racked pair of them, but I was wondering if the Neve's would sound the same.

I'm going to put together a six-pack of API 512's from Brent, and that will basically cover a drum set, and possibly a DI for bass.
The 35102's could cover a guitar amp, so I'm left thinking another pair of 35102's or a pair of 33114's for rhythm guitar. Which is why I was wondering if the Neve's would impart a different flavour, or basically sound the same.

I've seen the RCA BA-31's from time to time on e-Bay. These are behemoth pre's aren't they? Taking up 4 - 6 rack spaces?
I have also heard of their legendary performance.
It's a straight pre too isn't it? With no EQ?

How can I get a hold of Stephen Sank?

Track Rat gave you the info. I found Stephan to be a really nice guy and knows RCA like the back of his hand. His Father was a expert on RCA ( I think he even ran the place for a while ).

You can see them on Ebay every now and then but...almost never racked just the module. For me thats a major difference as racking them properly in excellent working condition can effect the sound and reliability. Also as far as I know there are very few in the world (I could be wrong). I really think they are more then worth their money.

Straight pre no EQ.
