VS840EX digital interface for tracking to PC (Cool Edit Pro2)

Need a little help here please...

Roland 840EX is hooked up to the PC through a USB cable...
after recording the first track...all seems ok...
when going to record the second track...the first track is silent...
cannot be heard through headphones...(the headphones are through the soundcard...)

Can anyone tell me what needs to be set(on the Roland and/or the PC) in order to track in Cool Edit via the 840EX....or is this impossible to do?

Just a little question. How did you connect an USB cable to the VS840EX?

Edirol audio converter via USB digital out...
any ideas?
