Tascam US-428
I'm looking at buying a US-428.
I was surprized that I there is not a whole lot of talk of this unit. Is this a sign? Please let me know you have experience or heard things. I am open to other recording options-soundcards etc.. But I want something that I can use with Guitar Pro (Cakewalk). |

too busy using it to talk about it.
i use it to record on my laptop when i go to artists' home. i use it to mix recordings on my desktop. the only problem that I've had is upgrading to winXP SP1 to stop stutters in the playback. that was a known windows bug in USB, it was not the US-428 that was the problem. if you go to Tascam's US-428 link there is a link to a BBS where many US-428 owners to go find out stuff. one day, i'm going to sell my frontier design wavecenter/tango24, mackie 1604, and RNP as well as the US-428 and buy a... Metric Halo I/O 2882 firewire audio interface. MSRP $1500 |

Thanks for writing back.
Do you use all of those units to record? I was hoping the Tascam and my Guitar Pro program would be enough to record simple 3-5 track compositions. Am I deluding myself? |

i use the US-428 with my laptop, and the frontier design wavecenter/tango24 with my desktop.
my desktop is in an adjacent closet with extension cords for the monitor, mouse and keyboard so that i don't get any PC noise in my recordings. i've been able to record using the US-428 into a Dell Inspiron 8100 with 16 tracks playing back. |

I use a US-224, which the baby sister to the US-428, but with 4 faders instead of 8, without the EQ knobs and without that pesky wall wart.
I use it strictly as a laptop recorder (no room at my place for a PC). Also a Dell Inspirion 8100. Because I have a 4200 rpm resident drive, the drivers that work best for me are the ASIO drivers. No issues with pops or clicks. |

that's right no phantom power.
i turn the gain on the us-428 all the way down, and connect a FMR Audio RNP to the US-428 line-in. |
