Mixes sound thin...why?

I always mix a song starting with the drums, I use a zoom 123
drum machine. If I make the drums sound fatter by say adding eq,
would it make the whole mix sound "bigger" or is this a stupid question? usually when I mix, instead of adding I always subtract
with the drums to get the bass to sit with the kick drum. I f I
make the drums "fatter" will it make my mix fatter??

No, it's exactly the opposite. The more frequencies the drums fill up the less room there will be for the bass to sit in.

How do you record the stringed instruments? Miced or direct? If you are recording everything thruogh the same mic and cheap preamp the mix may sound thin or narrow because of the range limitation of your signal chain.
