Compression - Does it work?

I may have this wrong.... but doesn't a compressor limit the sound going out of the computer?

I add the compressor after recording but it don't do anything more than turning down the main output.
Should have the compressor working before recording?
Or, possibley, I just don't understand compression at all =)

Help?
