Made in America?
I've decided to make an attempt at restoring the economy by purchasing only American produced products from now on. When I say "American produced", I mean designed and built in the US.
These are the companies that I know of (music gear related). Please add more to the list. Next time you get ready to purchase save a little more money and buy a US made product. It can't hurt. Presonus Mackie Sytek Gibson Fender Martin Taylor I know there are tons more. List them here. Dennis PS I'm gonna' post this in several forums so don't get pissed.

not really sure it would help that much
my macro economics is pretty weak, but an awful lot of our economic wealth is based on overseas manufacturing.
really very little of your money ends up there. what, you think the chinese factory workers are taking home a lot of dough? even their boses dont make all that much compared to a US CEO. you buy something like nike sneakers for $100 and maybe $4 goes overseas. the rest supports the us economy.

The idea that a countries economy benefits most from you buying native things, even if these are more expensive or inferior to foreign competitirs, are false.
The best thing you can do for your countrys economy is to work hard, for free. ![]()

"you buy something like nike sneakers for $100 and maybe $4 goes overseas. the rest supports the us economy"
Well the rest of that money is not being spent on middle income workers that pay most of the taxes that run our country ( U.S.A.) as a Tool & Die maker from the midwest i can see whats happening, the big companys for the sake of profits move there factories to china (even mexico is to expensive for them now) this eliminates money spent on health care, worker safety(osha) and the advantage of an unlimited work force.our goverment is doing nothing to protect these jobs, umlike other countries such as Canada, our Mayor here in Chicago has been complaining about the film industry leaving America for Canada, even the hit "chicago" was filmed in Canada ! they have a rule that no americans can be hired as help and i say Kudos to them for protecting there jobs, (i also think America subsidizes the canadien health care system by the fact they spend almost nothing on there military... why? they have us to protect them let us pay for it ..but thats another matter...lol )..Bostonfan2 |

Yes there is still many factories in mexico, there are also some towns that are now deserted because they were moved to china,
on one hand its nice to get gear at great prices because its imported, but in the long run we are shooting our selves in the foot. almost everything we buy in America is now made in china, mexico says they will lose almost all there shoe business to china within 4 years, by 2007 over 80 % of all molds and dies will come from china. they even make the Green Berets hats in china...yuk but its not the chinese fault its american businessmen that are doing it, and then others have to follow or they are done, you think anyone will be able to build mics to compete with studio projects in this country? no way or Alan would be doing himself. last time I looked there were members of this forum from all over the world, especially Europe and Australia. Why would it be in their best interest to only buy American products? And even 100% made in America products are using a lot of individual components that were manufactured elsewhere, so where do you draw the line?
I'm all for supporting my local economy, but I don't think that I would ever hesitate about buying an imported product if it was far and away the best of it's type and price. Too bad you won't be able to get Stephen Paul's new mic when it comes out. Don't worry, we'll let you know how it sounds. And I'm sure you will sell all your Neumann, AKG, Focusrite, Roland, Yamaha, Sony, Audio Technica, etc. gear and buy only American-made replacements. Assuming you can find any... (Guess you won't be watching any more television...) |

it wouldnt. and i agree with you that buying the best products no matter where they are made is the first choice, and you wont have to let me know how stephens mic sounds ill try it myself.. ![]() you mis understood my post, easy to do in a forum like this. Bostonfan2 |

Here in Australia it's extremely difficult not to buy something that's made in China. For example if you walk into a clothing shop I would extimate at least 80% of the stock is made in China, and that applies to every store in the country!
Footware is no different. Then there's electrical goods, Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, Hitachi etc. either manufactured in China or Malaysia or Thailand etc. The same applies to most general hardware items, kids toys etc. The bottom line is most consumers don't care... they would care if something was made here and cost twice as much... they wouldn't buy it! Our population is too small to support largescale manufacturing only to supply the local market if the prices are to be kept competative with the imports. And of course no one would work for $50 a week anyway! There has been some success stories however take Rode mics for instance. They sell more mics overseas than they do here and not just on price alone. They have been, on average, generally well received. Okay the capsules have been sourced from China but I believe in the near future Rode is planning to manufacture them locally. I was in Mexico about two years back and, while having breakfast at the hotel, overheard a conversation between two American businessmen. They were setting up some kind of manufacturing plant down there. The discussion centered around keeping the workers wages as low as possible and 'paying off' local officials to ensure everything ran 'smoothly'! They didn't seem bothered that I may have overheard them. I guess it was nothing out of the ordinary to them! ![]() |

I work for a printing company, in China they can print for only a little more money money than the paper costs us...and we have to pay for wages, inks, rates, heat and light on top of that. If you are buying enough product than the extra cost of moving stuff from Beijing to London rather than from London to Manchester is actually pretty much irrelevant.

I hope that this thread wasn't taken out of context. I didn't mean to step on anybodys toes or cause a riff.
What I know is this: There are lots of jobs leaving this country because the manufacturers can get it made cheaper overseas. Not that the quality is any better here or there its just less expensive to manufacturer. I know ALOT of tech support guys have lost their jobs to India because they are willing to do the same job for less money. I'm not dickin' any product or the country in which it was made. I just made a decision to purchase American products. I'm tired of my friends begin laid off and hearing guys ON THIS BOARD being laid off because our economy is in the shitter. Will it help? Probably not. But at least I'll know I tried. Nuff Said Dennis
