am i panning the wrong way?

when i pan i take two mono tracks and pann them equally apart, for example, highhats (80L,80R), rimshot(65L,65R). am i supposed to just have one mono track panned, which would result in this, high hats (80L,20R)?

2 mono tracks, panned apart gives you one louder mono track with no stereo image....

Unless I misunderstood what you're asking, your question suggest you don't understand placement and imaging in the stereo field and how it relates to mono tracks.

maybe i asked the wrong question, i understand that the ear percieves stereo by an identical sound reaching one ear before the other from the same source. what i should have asked is that in (hip hop) music, which is the more favored technique, panning two identical mono's out to create space or pan one mono track to create space and stereo. i know it depends on the producer what he wants but i just need to know the basics for a hip hop mix. when i listen to hip hop cd's the average mix seems balanced, and when i say balanced i don't mean high hat 30L, and rimshot 30R, i mean highhat 30L,30R. it seems as if every instrument, excluding vocals, are the same volume in each speaker in most hip hop music. i know for guitar licks you benifit from stereo panning but does every thing else need stereo panning?

if you had a mix with; high hats, bass drum, kick drum, rim shot, clap, grand piano, bass guitar all on mono tracks, how would you pan them in a hip hop mix?

IN this case I would have bass and kick panned dead-centre... HH, rims and claps would vary depending on the arrangement - if the rim plays counter-rhythm to the HH I would pan them apart; and the claps to balance out the percussive elements.... piano would be off to the side somewhere....

It also completely depends on the rhythms and arrangement involved, but that would be my starting point.........

i need to keep practicing, i try to always follow the low end down the middle rule, but i'm too stuborn to put my piano's to one side, i like those panned equally hmmm, i need to work on my mixing more.
