Good Setup??

I have Sonar 1.0 and im just wanting some ideas on how my setup looks and if anyone has any opinions on anything better. well my setup looks like this. condenser mic to mixing board, mixing board to pre-amp, pre-amp to audio interface, and then interface to USB. is there something that is better with the eqipment i have or with eqipment easily attained. thanks for any help! oh yea, any ideas on some good pre-amps for my AKG C 3000 B!

It's hard to give you advice because you have not given any specifics. If you have a decent mixer, you shouldn't need any outboard preamps, especially while you're learning.

Why are you using USB for home reocrding? You need a good soundcard like the Delta 44 or the Audiophile. Use your USB interface for a mobile setup, if you must.

Your signal chain should go as follows:

Mic > preamp (or mixer) > soundcard.

A common mistake that beginners make is to run their mic thorugh the board and through an outboard preamp. The point of a preamp is to get the cleanest possible signal into your recorder. Running it though both will only add noise.

i have the roland UA-30 interface with RCA and 1/4" ins. would the previously mentioned sound cards be far better??

How many channels? How much can you spend?

There's lots of good choices here. When you have it narrowed down by number of channels and price, ask your question here or do some additional research on the web.

Either a Delta-44 or 66 would be good for you.

And yeh, dont run your Mic to your Board then to the pre then to the soundcard, you will never get your levels right, become frustrated with all the noise, and give up. I am a first hand loser when it comes to that.

When I first got into this, I spent WAY to much money with out really learning how to use this. Well not WAY to much money, but yeh, I mean I had a MOTU 2408mkII, Art Pro Channel Pre/Comp/Eq, Mackie 1402, varoius other rack stuff, a hand full of mics. Just kind of went over kill. And the main problem was, is that I had the mind set, of that if I bought it, I MUST use it for everything. So I ran my Mics to my Mackie, to my Art Pre (The Pro-Channel, is a 2space rack mount) to the 2408, and could NEVER get my levels right, and when I did, it was SO NOISY. Now even tho I still really dont know TO much about my stuff, I have toned it down and I am now happy and my equipment suits my needs. Went from the 2408 to a Delta 44 (kind of kicking my self in the butt, but hey), have a small Beh mixer (just use it from headphone mixes) a small rolls headphone "amp" (more like a splitter), a M-Audio DMP3, a JoeMeek Mq3 (cant quite remember the name, the small JoeMeek pre, will probably ditch this for a Grace 101 tho), Presonus Bluemax, still a bunch of mics (just got a Rode NTK. My main point is just because you have the equipment dont think you need to use it for everthing you do.

im kinda confused on what to get and what is even availible for multi-track recorders. i know i could just send a mixer to sonar but i would like each track to be seperate in sonar and not just one big mess. so what exactly is out there?? thanks s much again!
