Syncronization

Hallo everybody,
I'm hoping somebody can help me here. I'm rather new to this so here we go.
I'm using Cubase 5.1R1 with a Tascam US-428 which I am using as a Remote control for Cubase/ Sound card and Interface.
I have now just bought the Alesis SR-16 which I am trying to get installed as Sound-Module/Midi to Syncronize start.
I think I'm conected right because I'm getting a Midi signal on the Tascam but when I try to record the Cubase record button won't start. I suppose I have to change the setting somewhere but I can't see where.
Any help on this would be gratefully apreciated
