Question Using Acid Pro 4.0/Sound Forge for Recording

I have a question. I was thinking about recording tracks on my Fostex home studio and somehow imputing them into my computer and Sound Forge to be processed or mixed. From there I was thinking about using Sound Forge or Acid Pro 4.0 to become my home studio so I can burn my tracks into the complete song. Is this possible? What do you suggest?

Well if you can get them off your fostex and onto your harddrive. Load the file into Soundforge, add effects or w/e and burn. Use Acid Pro if you're going to multitrack.

I did and for some reason the tracks are not on the same tempo. How do I make so they are all at the same speed.

Here is one example of what you could do….

Say, for instance, you have a 5 minute song on the Fostex named, “SING SING”, which consists of 8 separate tracks.

You could transfer the music into your computer, either through Sound Forge or Acid.

I am not familiar with the sync capabilities and/or the number of outputs on your Fostex piece, so I will assume that you only have 2 OUTS from your Fostex AND 2 INS on your computer (if you have midi IN/OUT AND more than 2 INS and 2 OUTS, I would suggest that you transfer the song directly into Acid with the maximum amount of outputs form the Fostex into the maximum amount of inputs on your computer).

So…………….. we are going to roll with the concept of 2 and 2 (no pun to Chuck).

You’ll need to lay a sync tone along the beginning and end of all the tracks while they are in the Fostex.

Record each track, one at a time, into SF.

Truncate the silence at the beginning and the end of each track (before and after the sync tone). [And of course save each track individually].

You should now have 8 separate tracks, in a folder, on your hard drive. Each at 5 minutes each.

Open Acid.

Then, VIEW>EXPLORER.

Locate the folder with the 8 tracks.

Highlight ALL 8 tracks, then RIGHT-CLICK> select ADD TO PROJECT.

If it asks you if you want to use the BEATMAPPER, select no [you’ve already set your beginning and end points in SF (you could use it but that’s a different post)].

Start to DRAW the wave of Track 1. Highlight the wave, then goto VIEW>TRACK PROPERTIES. In TRACK PROPERTIES goto the drop down box and change the wave from LOOP to ONE SHOT.

Repeat the process for the remaining 7 tracks.

They should ALL be lined up correctly, and at the proper tempo.

If you had MIDI IN and OUT on your Fostex AND your computer. You could just make ACID the MASTER device and make the FOSTEX the SLAVE device.

Setup your RECORD IN.

Then hit RECORD in ACID, then the FOSTEX would start playing.

This procedure is far greater than the first procedure, because you won’t have to lay the sync tone, you won’t have to do the truncation edits in SF, and your tracks will already be setup as an ONE SHOT‘s.

Peace……

Spin

Post script: Please excuse me if it seems as if I over simplied the procedures.

Spin, thanks for getting back to me. I have some more questions. What exactly do you mean by sync tone? Is this timesetting? How do I do that???

Plus, I'm using a stereo left and stereo right out of my Fostex and a going in my computer on an 1/8' jack into my line in hole. From there I'm using Musicmatch to extract each track, which I really don't want to do. I want to be able to press play on my Fostex and put it directly into Acid or Sound Forge. Can I do that?

1. You might not have to lay a sync tone. It'll depend on the information you give me in your next post.

2. No.

3. I'll explain that to you in detail, once you post your specs.

4. Refer to question # 3.

Peace..........
