Newbie 424 overdubbing problem

I have never used a 4 track before and I am stuck trying to record to the second track. I have been through the manual but discovered the p. 18 errors regarding playback of recording on 1st track. Now I am trying to overdub to 2d track and I don't hear anything on playback (although it appears to record). CAn anyone share the overdubbing steos with me. Can anyone give me a conceptual lesson in terms of determing how to set all of the various switches? (At the moment I am just blindly following the positions described in the manual without understanding the reason behind the setting). Thank you so much. Martin

Is it an original 424? If so...

The switches at the top of your eq strips choose what source that channel strip will receive. Mic/line will take any source you have plugged into that channel. Tape will route that tape track back into the mixer section. Keep these all in mic/line during tracking or you'll be bouncing anything thats in TAPE to the track you're recording to.

The problem you seem to be having is with monitering right? That means you use the moniter section (the pots to the right of the channel strips). Each tape track has a pot (1,2,3,4) and the master is basically your headphone level. Then there are the switches: the cue switch will route your mix of existing tape tracks into your headphone mix, LEFT will route any input source you have in channels 1 or 3. RIGHT does the same for 2&4.

To listen to everything once you've recorded as many tracks as you want, switch all of the sources to TAPE instead of mic/line. In your moniter section, depress LEFT and RIGHT, but make sure cue is up. Then use the EQ and faders to create your mix.

Lazyboy - thanks kindly for the help. I also found some info on an old archive thread that might help me sort this out. My machine is an MKIII, not the original 424. I will try out your suggestions at home tonight.
