Has anyone applied for a publisher membership with Ascap....

Well i did and I have not had any good luck. Its been over a year and when I call they give me excuses. 1st was you have to get the name clearance 1st and then submit an apllication.

well i sent in twice for a name reservation and still they tell me they havent recv it . So I made another call last week and this guy there told me I need to submit another name reservation and application together.

So to double check what he quoted me I called a second time and a lady told me he had given me wrong info, I need to mail in name reservation and wait for clearance then mail in application. So to just check one more time I made a 3rd call and another lady told me what the 1st guy had originally told me was correct, so i am totally confused now, so I said 1 MORE FINAL CALL and the 4th person told me that the information that the second person had given me was correct.......
So now I think I have a 50/50 chance of receiving the wrong info. And Im tired of buying these stamps to send ASCAP mail to lose.

So I'm open to any advice!

Join BMI....
you apply on-line...
they send you a contract...
you sign two copies and send it back....

I've been very happy with BMI as well (I got the name GASCAP MUSIC while filling out the BMI paper work and thinking about ascap right across the street in Nashville - I was surprised no one had taken it.)

To be fair, I know MANY satisfied writers with ascap too. It sounds like you caught a string of rookies on a bad day. Joro is right; BMI's on-line methods are easy, although I thought both services now have on-line procedures.

I had no problem with my ASCAP applcation - although it has been several years.

I agree it sounds like you are dealling with some poor representatives.

I walked in to their office in Nashville and requested an application and man they were ignorant. Like they were better than everyone else.. Of course most of Nashville acted that way..

I saw some of that from folks while I lived there...but mainly from those with personal issues...like lack of talent. The good players/writers I got to meet and work with were very nice...and my BMI encounters were good too.

In the long run I came away from it all with: Copping an attitude never pays in this business.
