Making a vocal booth for under $300

I am wanting to build a vocal booth. Check out this link:

http://www.hip-hop.com.au/production...vocalbooth.htm

Let me know if this is a good vocal booth to construct. Need someone's expertise...

Its not bad at all.

Similar in construction to my home studio's vocal booth, except I have mine over a stairwell so the floor flips up so the stairs can be used occasionally.

I used 2x4 douglass fir as verticals, and floor sills. Caulked everything real good, then applied 2 layers of 1" MDF on the outside of the frame, in the studio.

On the inside, between the studs I installed another two 1" MDF. Not on top of the studs, between the studs. The walls are essentually 4" thick, with each piece of wood (stud or panel) chaulked heavily before being screwed down.

On top of that, inside the vocal booth, I have two layers of carpet (between the studs, which brought the surface of the panels between the studs to the same level of the studs), then attached greenboard (green sheetrock) on all surfaces to make for a smooth finish, then 3" auralex foam on top of that. Didn't need bass traps in the vocal booth, so I have spares.

My vocal booth is just large enough to fit a 6'3" tall person with a few inches above their head before they hit the foam, not idea, but I'm not that tall and the singer I often collaborate with is 5'3".

Track lighting on a dimmer around the perimeter, facing the walls, keeps the heat off the singer's face and throat. One one wall is a double duplex outlet for guitar amps and such, as well as a seperate set of junction blocks with midi, TRS 1/4", and XLR microphone connections, four of each.

I also got a little creative and mounted a JL Cooper Cuepoint on the wall - just in case *I'm* in there pretending to be a guitar player, I can "rock the reels" remotely.

Yesterday I was quite bored waiting for linux to finish installing on a small embedded computer, so I used the time to come here !

Hi!

Things are... well... going I guess. Not dead so thats always a good thing

Haven't done 'squat' with my pro studio... its still a dusty warehouse with a boatload of gear in boxes. The machine shop moved in the other half and paying rent (finally!) so at least I'm no longer losing my shirt and in the green. The deed is still involved in a bogus, highly irritating lawsuit which is progressing slower than pouring a gallon of molassass in the artic.

Still occupying my free time with too many projects and activities... same old same old.

How have you been?

Frederic or anyone else,
Would this $300 setup be good only for voices? Could this work for instruments such as brass instruments and maybe congas?...stuff with low frequencies?

I know that this is an old thread but I just looked at the plan for this and I need to ask 1 How do you get into this thing? 2 Would this really be effective if there is no roof on it? And also what about the leeks where the sheets are only hinged together?

These plans show you how to build a basic booth for $300 then add features as desired. Worked out perfect for me. Just needed extra isolation for backing vocals in my studio and this design was great.

I have since added to my studio. Took down my dawbox vocal booth and augmented it to double wall design offered form the same company. I also built a drum room and used the DIY ventilation they offered.

http://www.dawbox.com/acoustic%20pro...entilation.htm

I am using 2" Auralex foam inside with about 95% coverage and for vocals this is tight. I am also using it for guitar amp overdubs in the same room as my drum room and it is very effective.
