Outboard Compressor

What benifits are there. I uselly just record the drums, vocals what ever, then add a C1, C4, or a RenC to the track that needs it. Why would i want to get a out board compressor say like a RNC.

it can be a safety valve before the A/D converters to prevent digital clipping

and very dynamic vocalists. you'll probably be compressing it more later anyways, and that way you get better signal/noise in the first place.

Cool

If you record at 24bit and stay away FAR from the 0dB, you may have quite decent results with the plugins, too... I record 16 bit and have to care to record rather hot, so it wouldn't be my way to use SW compressors exclusively...
