dbx 166 vs vs1880 compressors

I am considering purchasing a dbx 166 compressor/limiter to put between a vs1880 and a startRec 400. Will this dbx do a better job at compressing limiting that the onboard effects of the 1880? Just looking for a little info. Thanks!

I'm not sure whether it'll be OK as 'mastering compressor' but I assume that you'll soon like it when doing recording. Insert it into the signal path after the pre and have your peaks under control...

In addition you can use it to process tracks via aux send/input as 'insert return'. The process was several times described in here or at the vsplanet...
