easy reel to reel question

when facing the machine which side does the take up reel go on? also whats the cue switch do? should it be up or down. thanks.

Usually the take-up reel is on the right. Some reel->reel machines are bi-directional, but most of the pro-machines run left to right, so the take-up spool is on the right. The other thing which could be a bit confusing if you haven't come across it before is the concept of storing tapes "tails-out", in which case the tape might need to be re-wound before use, in which case, the empty-reel would be put on the left - confused? don't worry, I'm sure there are many experts here who will be only too willing to help you out.
